TOWCESTER WATER RECYCLING CENTRE (WRC)

The Towcester WRC plays a vital role in the treatment of waste water in the Northamptonshire catchment area. Rapid population growth and urban expansion in the area was threatening the site’s process capacity as incoming wastewater loads were increasing substantially. In addition, Phosphorus levels needed to be reduced significantly and the management of Stormwater had to be addressed due to increasing periods of heavy rainfall.

A major upgrade was planned in order to meet the requirements of which a reliable Control infrastructure would be pivotal. Paktronic Engineering (under their MCC Framework Agreement) were tasked by Anglian Water to design, manufacture and install the required MCCs and LCPs to provide the high level of control necessary for the efficient operation of the site.

The scope of work was identified as follows:

  1. New Main MCC
  2. New Site Distribution MCC
  3. New Trace Heating LCP 1 & LCP 2
  4. Existing Pumping Station MCC upgrade (new VSDs & Ethernet Interface Panel)
  5. New FST Bridge Scraper LCP 1 & LCP 2

The new MCCs and LCPs were configured as follows:

New Main MCC – (11700mm L x 2350mm H x 800mm D)

Section 1

  • Mains Incomer (rated at 400amps)
  • 7 Feeders (supplying other MCCs and Distribution Boards rated from 63amps to 200amps)

Section 2

  • ASP Feed Pumps No.1, 2, 3 & 4 (VSD starting – Ethernet)
  • Blower No. 1 & 2 (VSD Starting – Ethernet)

Section 3

  • Blower No. 3 (VSD Starting – Ethernet)
  • RAS Pumps No.1, 2, 3 & 4 (VSD Starting – Ethernet)

Section 4

  • Semi-Equipped Starter
  • SAS Buffer Tank Mixer (DOL Starting)
  • Anoxic Tank No.1 & 2 Mixers (DOL Starting)
  • Inlet Returns Liquors Pump No. 1 & 2 (DOL Starting)
  • Scum Pump (DOL Starting)

Section 5

  • ICA (complete with PLC, HMI, Telemetry, Ethernet & 6 Pulsar Level Controllers)

New Site Distribution MCC – (4400mm L x 2300mm H x 800mm D)

Section 1

  • Mains Incomer (rated at 1250amps)
  • Generator Incomer (rated at 1250amps)
  • Mains/Generator Changeover Controls

Section 2

  • 7 Feeders supplying other MCCs and Distribution Boards (rated from 63amps to 400amps)

Remaining Panel Requirements

The 3 remaining panel requirements were designed and manufactured as standalone wall mounted units. Their function and sizes were as follows:

  • New Trace Heating LCP 1 & LCP 2 – (each 600mm L x 600mm H x 300mm D)
  • Existing Pumping Station MCC Ethernet Interface Panel – (800mm L x 1000mm H x 300mm D)
  • New FST Bridge Scraper LCP 1 & LCP 2 – (each 800mm L x 800mm H x 300mm D)

All of the above requirements were designed and manufactured under one roof employing Paktronic’s inhouse expertise. Software development, testing, installation and commissioning requirements were also addressed inhouse.

Paktronic worked closely with Anglian Water during the installation phases to ensure that the interface of new panels with the site equipment updates was achieved without disrupting the operation of the site.
