WOLFERTON PUMPING STATION

A “new-build” pumping station within the Sandringham Estate to replace the original pumping station built in 1948. The late Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new pumping station on 5th February 2020, 72 years after Her Majesty’s Father, King George VI opened the original station.

This pumping station protects 13,500 acres of prime agriculture land and local communities from flooding by engaging 3 pumps capable of moving 4,800 litres per second (288,000 litres per minute).

Paktronic Engineering were contracted by a major Internal Drainage Board and Pump Manufacturer to design, manufacture and install a bespoke Distribution & Control System to provide full automated and intelligent control of the pumps, weedscreen cleaner and other ancillary equipment.

The Motor Control Centre (MCC) arrangement took the form of an “L” shape and was installed upon a 1metre-high platform to provide flood protection for the control system.

The MCC configuration was made up of 5 sections – 2 sections 4025mm L x 2100 H x 650mm W and 3 sections 5825mm L x 2100 H x 650 W

Sections:

  1. Mains Incomer & Generator Incomer (both employing a 800 amp, 4 pole ACBS)
  2. Distribution Panel, AMF Controls, PQ Filter (Master)
  3. PQ Filter (Slave), Pump No. 3 (employing 250kW VSD and controls)
  4. Pump No. 2, (employing 250kW VSD and controls) Pump No. 1 (employing 250 kW VSD and controls)
  5. ICA, Telemetry, Weedscreen Cleaner Controls, Telemetry

Employing the latest PLC and HMI technologies our inhouse software engineers created the necessary programming to read all incoming signals from level sensors, health monitors (pump and motor) and run-time to ensure full automation and intelligence protecting both the local environment and the pumping station’s main assets.
